The design objective for this project was to create an object that can be hung to display on a wall, then taken down and worn on the human form. Using the 45th anniversary of the Endangered Species Act and the 100th anniversary of the Migratory Bird Act as a source of inspiration, this project aims to create a unique piece that shares an important narrative.

For my project I wanted to focus on birds of prey as they could be, or rather should be, if we could be more conscious of the creatures we share the planet with. I wanted to capture the strength and grace of birds of prey on the hunt for my piece as a wall hanging. Using a core inspiration of flight, a key strength of these predators, I intend to recreate their form on the wall with hand painted surface detail. When taken off the wall and put on a human form, I want it to convey a level of homogeneity between humans and the rest of the natural world.
I started my project testing out some origami shapes in paper, while also choosing a fabric for my project. The fabric choice was very important because I knew I wanted to paint surface detail. I chose an organic cotton/hemp canvas as the main fabric and cotton gauze for some details. The final piece folds together to form a bird that can be hung on a wall. When removed, it can be worn as a garment.
